Mad Squirrel Tap St.Albans
In many ways, the city of St. Albans is one of the most prestigious beer destinations in the UK: The city is the only location in the country that can claim to have more drinking establishments now than at the start of the 21stcentury, along with one of the highest density of pubs per square mile outside of central London. CAMRA (The Campaign for Real Ale) started in a backstreet boozer there in 1972, and subsequently went on to (arguably) save the British beer industry from extinction. The city also boasts (again, arguably) the oldest pub in the country alongside the biggest beer festival in the region.
But for all its beer associated accolades, St. Albans currently lacks one thing, a truly dedicated modern craft beer bar. But that’s about to change…
Say hello to Mad Squirrel Tap St. Albans.
Located right in the heart of the city, at Heritage Close, 17, High Street, AL3 4EB (down the alleyway towards the Abbey, next to Lussmanns restaurant) and also accessible via Heritage Close, our outlet will put the Mad Squirrel stamp on this historic beer mecca. We will be installing 22 keg taps and 3 cask lines (on actual hand pulls on the front bar, a first in our outlets!) showcasing a wide range of our own beers plus guest beers from the UK’s leading independent craft breweries, plus three double fridges of bottles and cans to be enjoyed to drink in or take away. We’re committed to always having on a minimum of 8 guest keg, alongside Mad Squirrel core and rotational limited-edition beers (and a couple of ciders) to make sure this is the biggest and best selection of craft beer in town! Of course, we will also have a full range of premium wines, spirits and soft drinks to compliment the extensive beer selection.
The site is in a beautiful location, with a large outdoor beer garden to the side of the property which overlooks the Abbey and seating across two floors, with the upstairs being particularly light and airy, with fantastic views of the nearby historic architecture. The bar and further seating are located on the ground floor. Across the two levels the indoor square footage totals over 1700 which means there is plenty of room for the thirsty beer lovers of St. Albans to be comfortable. The sites dual frontage and town centre location means it benefits from significant passing footfall and we are confident it will quickly become a destination drinking spot for residents and visitors to this historic city.
Drinking is hungry work and so we will be serving our artisan pizzas to placate those beer munchies. We are also looking at a potential partnership with a daytime, food-based business for the upstairs area, of which we will hopefully be able to reveal more information about soon.
We have been planning and preparing for this site for some time and there is some significant work to be done to bring the venue in line with our vision. That being said, the license is already in place and fit out work is beginning imminently, so we are confident for a quick turnaround and a spring time opening.
We are incredibly excited about this, our seventh site. This is our chance to make a real contribution to the prestigious beer lineage of this historic city. We can’t wait to open our doors and share our vision with you.
